Avios reward flights - cancellation costs

We have a hotel booked in Tenerife for August as a backup incase we don’t get out to Florida but don’t have flights booked as yet.

It just occurred to me to check reward flights and there is availability for the dates we’d need.

I know that I’d get the avios points back if I cancel but I’m unsure on the cancellation costs.

The BA site says it’s £35 to cancel and reclaim the avios, but I found a Head for Points article from earlier this year that says it’s £35pp or the taxes whichever is lower.

The taxes are only £3 for the three of us. Which I’m happy to lose.

Anybody know if this is definitely the case and that I’d only lose £3 if I cancel?

I’m worried if I leave it too late to book flights that they’ll be prohibitively expensive.
