Thanks all, this is really helpful.

I hadn’t found anything about joint pain linked to pernicious anaemia or b12 and folate deficiency so it’s interesting to hear that others had joint pain too.

I will follow up regarding haemocromotosis too as there are a few in my family with it and I know it’s hereditary.

I wonder if the two are ever linked?

As the blood test showed vitamin b and folate levels were low I hope that any treatment offered will at least ease any symptoms. Anything to help the joint pain would make a huge difference right now.

Sadly my dad passed away a few years ago, but 3 of his four siblings have it and both of his parents had it too. My dad was terrified of doctors and refused to be tested.

I only ask because I had lots of iron tablets from being around 14 and I suffered with anaemia and other vitamin deficiencies for around ten years before a doctor actually took the time to investigate why I was feeling so ill. I was then diagnosed with coeliac disease.

I must sound like a broken record on the dibb, but I’m trying to prevent other people from feeling rubbish for years without answers!
Thank you so much for taking time to ask. They believe it’s period related, however they are taking further bloods after 3 months to see if it’s resolved the problem and if not, then will investigate further.

My DD has had many different symptoms and unresolved medical issues over the years too, which could all be related to the current symptoms and has been left on many occasions after being told by medical professionals that they can’t do anything as it’s undiagnosed, so very similar to your experience. It’s very interesting, and sad, to hear that you have also suffered for so long. I’m hoping that my DD’s problems are improving with the short course of supplements but if not, then she will ask then for further tests

Yes I would definitely push for more tests, whether the supplements work or not as there could still be a cause behind it all.

I do find as women we are regularly fobbed off and told that our issues are caused by our periods, when really, it’s very rarely caused by periods at all.

Coeliac disease is a difficult one because despite it being so common, there’s still such a lack of awareness around it, even with doctors. I saw numerous doctors over the years and only one ever thought to test me. Whereas I think, if someone presents with low b12 and/or anaemia or similar, they should automatically be sent for a blood test to rule out things like coeliac disease and pernicious anaemia.

I was so ill for so long and I’m so grateful that finally someone got me diagnosed! I hope your daughter feels better soon.

Thank you, we will ask for more tests as my DD has been regularly been told it’s periods/hormones as if that’s something she just has to put up with even though she’s been very poorly.

I can understand the relief you must have felt to finally have a diagnosis as it’s so frustrating to not know what’s causing the problem
