There will obviously be Dibbers who have flown more recently than us but we were given them last November but weren't asked for them as we used the kiosks. Used the kiosks about four times and never been asked for the forms.

Why on earth would you not be allowed to take hard glasses cases. We always do. As you say a wind up.

Mick

We were given customs form on plane couple of weeks ago , we filled it in, but never handed it in as we used the machines on landing.

We were given one last September. I offered it and it was accepted but he didn't look at it.

If you use a kiosk, then you don't need the form as the questions are answered on the kiosk. However, you don't know whether the kiosks will actually be in use until you get there (I flew twice in 2017, and neither time were they available - directed to straight to the officers, as the immigration hall was empty). You do need the form if not using a kiosk, which definitely applies to anyone who has not been since 2008. You should be given one when you check in, so you need to fill it in whilst on the plane just in case.
