First class Stamp - 85p !

I hear from 01 Jan the price of a 1st class stamp is going up 9p to 85p ! What is going on ? With practically 0% inflation and wage restraints or cuts I had hoped ITN may have got this wrong. I feel the post office may be the next casualty of the night street as they are pricing themselves out of business ...

Final thought: But I guess if I stock up on 1st Class stamps now (rather than the ones with price on) they will be valid until they carry me out in a wooden box ?

So they have gone up 21% since march this year

It’s shocking! First thought I had was that I remember when a first class stamp was 9p! Let alone a massive 9p increase...

No it's correct.

Nick Landon, chief commercial officer at Royal Mail, said: "Like other companies, 2020 has been a challenging year for Royal Mail.
"Our people have worked tirelessly to keep the UK connected throughout the pandemic and associated restrictions.
"These price increases will help us continue to deliver and sustain the Universal Service in challenging circumstances."

On the plus side 2nd class are only going up by 1p.

This follows last weeks ruling by OFCOM that they could possibly cut Saturday deliveries although any change to Royal Mail's universal service obligation would need to be made by Parliament.

Well it's still cheap imo. Would cost me a lot more than 85p to travel from my house to London or Inverness to deliver a letter by hand.

This is what Martin Lewis always advises when stamps go up - stock up if you can while they're cheaper and have no price on them!

It is hard to believe- many of the older generation rely on Royal Mail as against email and they are not seeing their pensions rises by as much ! Maybe they should consider cutting their cloth a little first ... I predict an uproar and some challenges probably by Age UK and a few MP/Lords ...

I’ll be in a minority here but I think even at the new price it’s a cheap service.
