Is that the motorway without a hard shoulder? For example part of the M5 loses its hard shoulder in rush hour to ease congestion.

Sounds awful! At least you’re all safe, they sound really dangerous!

Post is a little baffling - as someone else has pointed out, trucks can't do 60 anyway, they're limited.

Sounds like OP could have just driven just fine in 4th gear - cars used to have only 4 gears, you don't have to use 5th. Even an old Clio should do 70 in 4th.

The absolute last thing you want to do is stop on a smart motorway - indeed, any motorway.

I'm glad you raised this about trucks. This was mentioned a few Months ago on here so I double checked their speed when I went up and down the M4, M5, M42 and M1 last weekend.

Doing 65 to 70 in the middle lane and repeatedly having a truck up my backside they are certainly not limited any more and these weren't foreign wagons but UK ones.

I'm not 100% on this but the speed limit for trucks did change a while ago and they can legally do 60 on motorways but trucks are required by the EU to be limited to 56MPH (90KPH).

One reason I've seen for the apparent excess speed is the tachograph in trucks is very accurate whereas car speedos often over-read quite a bit - so you may find you're going slower than you think. Have you ever cross-checked your speed with GPS?

Edited a bit as I think the 56 limiter still applies.

My IT skills are limited to using a laser line for fitting a kitchen or logging on to the Dibb!

My car is a 3ltr BMW and under 2 years old so I suspect it's pretty accurate.

I wonder if they are disabling the limiters or just ignoring the limit pertinent to them?

Dunno . I think it's a pretty serious offence to interfere with it, and it's a bit obvious if a truck is speeding.

We're on holiday at the moment and the absolute worst happened on the way to the airport - we broke down! It was only a flat but our model of car doesn't have a spare. Luckily my MIL and my BIL answered their phones and came to our rescue at 3am. We got to the airport on time but it reinforces why l like an airport hotel or a very early start.

Trucks are limited to 56mph/90 kph, but some seem to do more naturally or in some cases allegedly dodgy things are being used to bypass the limiter and tachometer

Not in the UK they aren't anymore, it is now 60mph as it changed a few years ago.

Some, especially European trucks are still on the lower limit as this is still the case in some mainland Europe countries.
