Garry 147 - Day 14 – Disney MGM and 50s Prime Time Café – Sunday 8th August.
Garry 147 - Day 14 – Disney MGM and 50s Prime Time Café – Sunday 8th August.
Got up and made the free 8am shuttle to MGM and were in the Q for 8:30am waiting for it to open. After all the rain yesterday, this morning was lovely but showers were forecast and we hoped it wouldn’t interfere with the day too much. All the talk in the Q between us was about the Tower of Terror which was clearly visible from the entrance. As soon as the park opened we headed there. I was worried because falling from heights wasn’t my thing and DD 8 was worried because she doesn’t like ghosts. There were no crowds and we were all soon strapped into the lift and going up. I had expected a straight up and down ride but you go up a bit and when the doors open you see down a corridor. Ghosts materialise then stars appear and it looks like you are looking out into space. It was all brilliantly done. Then it was up again to look down another corridor but this time the whole ride moved down that corridor and into another lift. Then the up and down bit started. DD loved it and if I’m honest we all did including me but 2 days later I had pains in my upper arms and shoulders as if I’d been weight lifting down the gym. Then I realised that during this ride I had been gripping the seat so tight every time we dropped it was as good as a work out. Feeling very proud of myself for surviving the Tower we went on to the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. DW who likes coasters even less than me backed out of going on this one so that left me having to do it with the kids. It was great – or what I’d seen of it was great - I might have had my eyes shut at times. With the two big and fearful rides out of the way it was time to enjoy the rest of the park. DD loved Beauty and the Beast and Voyage of the little Mermaid and the hecklers in the Muppets were as funny as ever – ‘Look at that guy in the Goofy hat’ – ‘That’s not a hat.’ – ‘Oh, Sorry Madam.’ Other hits were the ‘Magic of Disney Animation’ and ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ which I didn’t think would be up to much but by the end I was feeling very competitive and annoyed that I didn’t get on the leader board because I felt I was doing well. During the day there were several thunder storms and we had two attempts to get on the Back Lot Tour before we made it. I wasn’t really expecting the great special effects you end up right in the middle of and thought this was better than the Earthquake and Twister rides at Universal. The only thing we missed that we wanted to see was Fantasmic– it was on too late for us to get back to the Epcot pickup point in time for the return shuttle but in the end it was it was cancelled that day because of the weather. For tea we had a PS for the 50s Prime Time Café. It’s a funny place to eat, themed like a household american kitchen and is great to take kids if you want them to eat their dinner. The servers act like your mum, auntie etc. We were immediately warned to get our elbows off the table! This is probably the closest you can get to having dinner at Fawlty Towers. At one table someone hadn’t cleaned their plate and the server insisted in sitting down with them and playing Trains with spoonfuls of food – ‘Open wide here comes the train.’ The kids were horrified at the prospect of this happening to them and ate really well. After our meal we left MGM and went to the pier just outside to catch the boat to Epcot. This is worth doing if you are not staying at a Disney Hotel because the trip cruises past several of their resort complexes and they looked very nice. Once at Epcot it was the shuttle home and bed. Tomorrow – Blizzard Beach and Bennigans with friends. |
