Mobile Tax on income -

Sorry this is probably a stupid question but is it my payroll that calculates how much tax is deducted from your wages according to your tax code . It’s nothing to do with the tax office ? My tax deductions are all over the place and before I complain I need to check. I have a right too 😀 I earn the same each month roughly but tax taken is always different amounts deducted . On my government tax account it shows roughly how much tax they expect me to pay this year until April and I am nearly at that figure now in July ! Added to the fact my work already stated I earned four thousand more than I did last year so tax office think I owe them money . I have spoken to tax office and they can see their is an error by my employer but getting them to admit to it is a different matter . Every pay day is just a lottery as to what my wages will be !

What’s your tax code? Does it change each pay day? Only HMRC can adjust your tax code. Your employer would get notification from HMRC P9 (I think) then change your code on their payroll. I doubt anyone does manual wages as it’s all rti. Means every time an employee is paid, the employer sends your information electronically to HMRC.

I agree with this. HMRC set your tax code and inform payroll of what it should be, usually electronically. It normally also includes earnings to date and tax paid to date if it is allocated mid-year ie if you are starting a new employment. The payroll system then calculates the tax due that month and electronically informs HMRC of your earnings for that month and tax paid via RTI which stands for Real Time Information if I recall correctly.

I would double check on your pay slips if it is the same tax code every month as if HMRC tell payroll to change it then they have no choice but to do so.

Is this your only income?

sounds like because of those perceived under payment of £4000 last year they have adjusted you tax code to recover that £4000 in addition to any tax you would pay this year. So if you owed £4000 thats like paying 20% tax on £20,000 so that would make you tax look awful.
Look at your 4 payslips and the tax code on them see if that has changed. If so then that explains the difference. Then as you know the £4000 is an error with your employer send an email or letter to your payroll team and your manager asking them to resolve this issue before the next payroll run.
If you don't have any other incomes and no extras like medical coverage calcuating your tax is simple. But please remember that Tax and NI rates have changed a couple of time recently.
