Happened regularly back in 2010 and 2011 when compulsory ESTAs were fairly new but I see from other current threads that Tui are still asking for a print out. Absolutely ridiculous. Passport swipes at both sides show ESTA (or visa) status.

If a VWP signatory carrier allowed anyone on to a flight without an ESTA (or visa) they would face substantial fines and, if repeated, removal from the approved list of carriers

We have also seen someone go part way through the process to get a new ESTA, cancel out, but have gone past the stage of the existing ESTA being cancelled, so even though they had a piece of paper saying they had an ESTA that was in date, the electronic record said they did not. And after all the E in ESTA stands for electronic.

Having read maybe 90% of ESTA posts since they were made compulsory I've also seen some every sad tales. Most renewal rejections are based on carelessness I'm afraid on the basis that ESTAs have to be done at half time in the footie with your dinner on your lap while the kids are climbing on your shoulders.

Plus the sad tale as you say of a lady wanting to check the status of her ESTA but went a stage too far and the perfectly valid ESTA was cancelled. This was at the airport too at the time when the 72 hour rule for approval was active. Had to let her family go ahead and she followed 3 days later.

So personal admission time. Entered the states post-ESTA around 20+ times and always had a print out in the cabin bag. Times I've been asked a remotely ESTA question in the USA - zero. Times I've been asked for my ESTA print out at UK check in - zero.

Same. In 11 trips, I’ve never been asked to present them once.

I haven't read the whole thread but the only time I have been asked to present a printed ESTA is when boarding a Disney Cruise
I've never been asked at either airport but have now been asked three times by DCL. Not sure if they would have accepted a screen shot on my phone as I always take a print out
