I've just moved our August holiday to Christmas, as I had doubts that we would be able to travel then. Keeping our fingers crossed we can go at Christmas

We are meant to be going mid Aug (moved from last year) and although I think, and hope, that this still happens I have booked a campsite in the Lake District as a back up that can be cancelled free of charge closer to the time.

For us we are happy to go with mask wearing and social distancing etc but if we have to quarantine in a hotel when we arrive in Florida or when we get home we wont be able to make that work.

So as far as my holiday to the US is concerned - the two countries involved are both going pretty well. And there is nothing to suggest anything other than this accelerating on both sides.
Travel will likely open bit by bit when countries at each end are reciprocally deemed "safe".
No country wants to remain "closed" a minute longer than absolutely necessary.

I think they are trying to deter travel this year but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.

I’m pretty confident for August given the vaccination rate. If you do the maths we have all had a first dose by end June ish.

USA will be well on the way by then as well. There is pressure to get the economy moving and I think air bridges will be opened between high vaccine countries, namely UK-USA.

Presumably would need the two doses for coverage. Also just vaccinated doesn’t mean that there is no virus, other social distancing will not just go away. Whilst it would be great for abroad hols, don’t think this is happening this year whilst being responsible. Even if travel is possible with paid hotel isolation, doesn’t seem overall the most responsible holistic view.

There may be windows if you are luck. I managed a week in Spain last year literally in the tiny window that jet 2 were flying. It was pure luck. But if I was looking to book, I would not with the amount of money it is.

I was looking at 2022 anyway but with the looming no dining plan, to be honest its just not worth it. I have been a number of times as have the children so I'm now for the first time not planning another trip .

I'm still at 20 / 80 if, for most to be able to travel people want...

- Not having to pay for a test on the way out (could add c£100 per family member)
- The US to permit direct travel from the UK to the US
- Not having to quarantine on the way out (not many people could afford the time/money to sit in a hotel for 10 or 14 nights at the beginning of a holiday)
- Not having to get a test on the way back (again - cost)
- Not having to quarantine on the way back (same issue with time/money for many)
- Something we currently have no awareness of happening (we can only guess)

...but we have flights booked for the 25th July and will be crossing everything until then!

I’m still hopeful for August, I think we’ll have a better idea over the next 2-3 months.

As an “insurance policy” though, I have just booked to go in August 2022 too. Originally I was planning to amend it if we can go this year, but I think we’ve talked ourselves into keeping it regardless!

They said the same last year and were wrong.

I won’t be taking travel advice from dr Hillary, he knows no more than you or me.
