seriously considering ditching it again now. i dont need the breakdown cover, havent previously needed/used mobile cover (in 20 years of owning phones, i've lost one phone, and my average phone lifespan is 3-4 years), and i can get cheaper worldwide travel insurance elsewhere

Having now read the changes better I am inclined to agree with you. I feel the sneaky thing is the removal of interest which as you say halved the £13 per month.
