I thought they were outrageous from the beginning but when you added you invited them for Christmas Eve and they refused I decided they must be insane instead!

Are they always so demanding?

So not only did they invite themselves and turn down a christmas eve roast, they had the cheek to be displeased when told if they wanted a roast christmas day they could cook it themselves ! I think you are clearly a much nicer person than me, you gave many options to try and find some middle ground whereas I would have told them a straight out no. Cheeky cheeky unpleasant people !

I am going to keep this clean as is a family forum... I would tell them to ≈≈≈≈≈≈ off to a substandard carvery and then are welcome to join you later on after you have enjoyed a peaceful buffet, with the strong hope of them declining this. They clearly just wanted a free easy Christmas dinner. Cheeky fudgers.

For years I used to do a special dinner on Christmas Eve for my Austrian (now ex) mother in law, get rid of them by 1am , and be up early to prepare traditional Christmas dinner for my own family and my parents.
I got that Christmas Eve was "the day" for her and she wanted to share it with her only son before going off to spend a traditional Christmas Day with her partner's (Hindu) family . I don't believe religion makes Christma, I see it as a family day so I understood but I only did it because it meant I always got my day too. I wouldn't have changed my own family traditions for it. We all celebrate our own way and if people want to join us, they don't get to rewrite MY traditions and insist on their own. If they want that then they can host in their own home.

From past personal experience I would say stick with your own family traditions. If you change you could find that for the next 20 years you spend Christmas pleasing other family members. I agree with the majority of people's views, if they don't like your approach they can always go elsewhere. It is rude and inconsiderate, some people can be dominant if allowed.

It's only the end of August, if this is setting the tone of the run-up to Christmas, disinvite them for the sake of your Christmas.

Sorry, you're being dictated to about the meal to serve, in your own home, for guests you didn't invite.

There are two words.

If they don't like it, stay at home!

Do what your family does normally. They can lump it.

Sometimes I am incredulous of posts and the expectations and sheer cheek of families and guests , I have led a sheltered life with a very small family and no family dynamics.

Its your day , not theirs and if it does'nt suit them it's their issue Not yours.

I remember a work colleague taking out a loan to buy Christmas presents as he had been told by his family they would'nt speak to him again if they did'nt get presents , I had never heard anything like it !
