We have never ever been split up as a family/booking group in all the 20+ years we have been flying with BA. We have only ever booked seats once and that was only because 2 of us were travelling and the seat costs were dirt cheap.

We flew in August with BA for first time, 2 Ad and 2CH (8 and 13). They put 3 of us together and my wife 10 rows up. She is a nervous flyer so i phoned. After a few suggestions (one included my children sit separate and i join my wife, which i thought was crazy) they agreed to move us free into paid for seats free, rows of 3, so had 2 in front, and 2 behind leaving window seat empty. This was around 5 days before flying, up until this point there was loads of empty rows of 4 so seemed odd.

Then at 24 hour checkin it allowed me to change for free, and there was a lovely row of 4 at the back where the window seats change from 3 to 2 so had a wider area.

I guess my point is, it seems odd we were split when there was availability for a row of 4. On way home the flight was 3 - 3 - 3 so was a 3 and 1 over aisle.

We gambled, didn't book seats, and we were allocated seats together at check-in. If I went with BA again, I definitely wouldn't pay for seat allocation.

I got split from my son, 13 at the time, in August 2018 on the journey back. They put him in the seat in front of me, which I know isn't strictly being split up, but as we were both in window seats wasn't great. Pre book this summer to make sure it didn't happen again
