Ileostomy question regarding restraint systems?

My DH had an ileostomy operation last year and this is our first return trip back to Florida since the op.

I have just been speaking to DH and he has just told me that he wouldn't be able to ride any roller coasters because of the restraint systems potentially pushing down on the bag. I have to be honest, this wasn't something I had even thought about and I hate the thought of him missing out on something purely because he is worried something might not be possible even if it is.

So my question is this- are there any rides that he should give a miss? Any hints or tips you can suggest?

Thanks in advance,
Pauline

I think this is a question for his medical team. Some rides have seats you can try before joining the line so he could try those, there is such a range of different restraints it would be hard to give general advice. The accessibility guides don't give much detail about restraints but Guest Relations may be able to help with details of specific rides.

Hi,

My friend has the same medical condition as your husband and came to Disney with us Sept 2012.

She went on all rides with no issues at all. I think maybe as this is all still new to your husband he is maybe over thinking and worrying about things but it has never stopped my friend doing anything.

I think speaking to his stoma nurse may be an idea for reassurance.

Hope this helps.

Thank you both, I shall get him to have a chat with the stoma nurse as suggested. I have done some hunting around on other specialist websites and it doesn't look as though it should be an issue as long as he is relatively sensible about it.

i would say that it wouldnt be a problem, if in doubt carry a towel etc and sort of put it in as a cover/protection but my son had a colostomy bag when he was little and so i would say it wouldnt really be an issue... always have it empty tho just in case.

we took my mil who was 70 with us in 2012 and she has the same medical condition

she was great with the rides although she was limited with the bigger rides purely because of age,

with her stoma she always made sure the bag itself was empty and when she was worried it would activate then we would wait, where lap bars were used she placed her hand across her stoma just above to stop any bar or restraint compressing it completely and then withdrew her hand just before riding, it would give her that extra few centimetres "just in case" and made her feel more comfortable

i have to say for a pensioner with a condition like this to cope with she was a absolute star she braved both TOT and Everest when i sat both of these rides out
