travelling with a wheelchair
Thinking about buying a cheapy(?) Manual wheelchair-dh would be pushing.
How does it work at the airport-both ends? The closest experience we've had to this was travelling with a pushchair years ago-and although it was still functional-was a total mess Therefore-3 thoughts spring to mind: Best place to buy? Which model-so many! Experiences of taking your own versus hiring in Orlando? Thanks in advance. |

If it was a cheap wheelchair it would be a nightmare and very hard work for whoever was pushing it .

We take our daughters wheelchair every year, it's really easy. We wheel her up to the doors of the plane then the ground crew take the wheelchair and put it in the hold, when you get to the other end they bring it back to the plane door for you, simples.

My daughter is in her wheelchair also but I think the op wants to purchase a cheap one that are different to what we would use . If am correct in thinking it's going to be like the ones you can purchase in Argos for about £200

We use the wheelchairs at the airport and then, we have one in the villa and a electric scooter as well. Before we owned a house, we just rented them, we have never had a problem.

The flimsier (cheaper) the chair the less comfortable it will be and the harder it will be to push. A more substantial chair would make things easier all round. Pushing a wheelchair around the parks is very hard work.
At the airport you can either check a wheelchair in with the luggage or request to keep it until boarding. If you do this it will be brought up to the aircraft after landing rather than on the carousel. You may be able to borrow one, our local Disability Advice Centre and Red Cross do loans for a nominal donation. You can easily arrange a wheelchair at the airport and have a hired one waiting at your resort. These are likely to be much better quality chairs and you have some back up if anything goes wrong. We always travel with a toolkit for the wheelchair as inevitably something breaks (baggage handlers not always very gentle!) or loosens off when we are away so be prepared to make running repairs if you take your own.
