new photo card licence -problems?

Have heard that car hire is difficult if you no longer have the green paper copy? Has anyone hired a car without it yet? Did you have any problems?

All you need is your photo driving licence. Lots of people on you have confirmed that there is no difficulty.

The green paper bit (endorsements)has been replaced by a DVLA code (valid for 72 hours) that you give the hire company but only within the EU. US car hire can't be bothered to be contacting the DVLA all day long.

as any points you may or may not have are not applicable in the US they are of no interest to them, only that you have a valid license

in 8years previsouly i was never asked for the paper copy whilst collecting a car

fwiw im sure they arent applicable in europe either so not sure what/why we need this code?

Thanks everyone. I had to get new licence as expired when I was there and felt more important to have a valid one. No points either so they can check all they want!

Geoffa UK only mate you don't need for Europe can't get points or a ban, fine or jail, info is available on DVLA about all of this.

Duncanb. First time you have been wrong! Foriegn drivers in the UK can be given penalty points (but only by a Court not by a fixed penalty notice) and they can be fined by a Court and they can be jailed.

However the points they amass are irrelevant to their foriegn license and only become pertinent if they apply for a DVLA license. So in that situation their first British license will arrive with points already loaded on.

However this is very rare and really tends to only affect those from Europe in the main who are settling here and can only drive for a year on their current overseas license.
