DCL Med Travel Insurance

Hi, does anybody know what the situation is with regards to travel insurance for the DCL med cruises? I assumed that European cover would be sufficient rather than worldwide, but would this cover any medical treatment that you might need on board the ship given that this would be charged in dollars? Hopefully wont be needing medical attention but you never know.

Thanks

I always insure for our cruise ourselves (ie independently) rather than taking DCL insurance too.

The situation with insuring independently is usually this ;

- some insurance companies will cover you at no extra charge
- some insurance companies will cover you, but at an extra charge
- some insurance companies will not cover you at all.

In all cases you do need to check with them which will apply, and some will require you to notify them about your cruise (even if they don't charge extra for it) before you go.

hope this helps

...we presently use Atlas Direct, but I have used 24drtravel and also Direct Line... none of which have charged extra.

Your EHIC will not cover you on the ship, you will have to take out additional insurance.

i bought my insurance with virgin money and it's a normal visiting europe policy, i explained it was a cruise holiday and we're on a american ship and the guy knew what i was talking about when i said if i needed a policy that covered healthcare as i would be charged in US $$$ if i was ill onboard and needed covering for this, he assured me that this policy covered us for this and sent me the email pdf document to look over

we paid slightly more as i have pre existing conditions and needed them covering and i also needed the kids disability declared too just to be 100% certain that i was fully covered

my children are physically healthy Deborah but the autism bit has cropped up before and we have someone in the family who works in insurance claims and they recommended we declared this to the insurance so they where aware of it when we first went to the states and we have done so ever since

i think it's because the very nature of autism is that the children can be unpredicatable and have outbursts and if one of them hurt themselves which they have done in the past and if they needed hospital treatment our fear was that perhaps they would not pay up if we had not declared this, we rarely see a increase in premuims for the autism and it's nice to know they will not reject a claim because we never told them
