All round good bloke

I remember when (in my previous house) my ex and I decided to get three quotes for double glazing.
When each of the salesmen turned up I made it clear they were guests in our house and our rules being... 1) the only price we would base our decision on was the first one they gave us 2) if they had to phone their managers to get a better price (which a lot of the time they would pretend to do) we would ask them to leave 3) we would not accept a discount which was dependant on an advertising board being put outside of the house. The salesmen weren't used to being "welcomed" like that !

Awesome!
I still cannot believe salesmen still do that "ill phone my manager " rubbish! And when they go through the "book" on finance etc. Especially when you've already told them you'll be paying cash! My DH quotes for air-conditioning daily and makes his own decisions on discount etc. It drives him mental when they can't even give £500 off a job without asking first. |

I have a similar approach when buying a new car. I always let the Salesman know that I will not be making an immediate decision even if they warn me that I could lose the deal if I dont proceed on the day. I advise that I will be getting at least 4 other prices from other dealers and that they should provide me with their best and final price as I will not be returning to play one dealer off against another to get a lower price - if they could give a lower price they should have done so from the outset.

In my experience most kitchen companies are rubbish everyone I know who has used the 'big boys' has had problems, stuff doesn't fit, doesn't match, isn't what you ordered.
Everyone I know who has used a 'local bloke' has been very happy with the result. A local bloke (or gal, I have a female friend who fits kitchens) has a local reputation to uphold. As regards taking note of how people dress - years ago a friend of mine worked in a top London hotel (I forget which one but it was one of the TOP thousand-pound-a-night ones) and he said all the staff were strictly instructed NOT to take notice of how people were dressed because the richest people commonly didn't care how they looked. |

We have had the same problem with salesmen telling us what we can and cannot afford.
The worst one, was when we went to look at a new car, went inside the showroom to be told that the secondhand cars were outside. DH said that's nice, we don't want one of them and pointed to the dearest one in the showroom, we come to buy that. Needless to say we didn't buy a car from there. |

While I was working away from home (lived in Scotland, worked in Reading) my salary dropped £17k and I had to pay to fly home every two weeks out of my own pocket. My food budget per month was £40. It was tough. To help out I did mystery shopping to supplement my income while away.
I did loads of sales assessments, hundreds. Kitchens, cars, trucks, vans, storage, houses. You name it, I assessed it. The quality of some of the salespeople was enlightening, some were genuinely nice and good at their job. Without exception the car salesmen at the 'quality' dealerships were the worst, by a large margin. |
