Violin strings!

Another random one.

DD3 starts her lessons tomorrow (she is 8) at school, and is using the violin that DD2 used when she started to learn (also aged 8). It’s a half size. However, one of the stings snapped today.

I don’t know anything about violins but one of the mum’s has told me that it’s often cheaper to replace the violin than the strings - she recounted a story of being quoted £25 to replace one guitar string. Now the violin wasn’t that cheap but it wasn’t the most expensive either (it was about (£70).

Does anyone know if this is correct...is it really going to cost me big bucks to have the string replaced (and I don’t event know where I can get that done right now anyway!)?

I’m so blooming cross... I told them to leave it and I’d get it down for her to have a hold etc but did they listen? No!

Most good violin teachers will have a supply of spare strings. They cost a few pounds.

Thank you both! It seem steep after I looked online to buy strings, but I just assumed it was the cost of having them fitted that bumped it up. As I said, I have no idea about violins, my instruments of choice were piano and voice, so I don’t know how long/how fiddly it is.

I will have to hope that the local music service who deliver the lessons in school have some strings with them! Thanks again. X

The music teacher will fit the string. It’s not a difficult job.

It’s not difficult to fit them yourself - my husband did mine after watching a YouTube video. I’ve bought strings from Stringzone online - they are really good. Hope your daughter enjoys her lessons - I’ve been learning for about 18 months now.

I learnt the violin when at school many years ago and we were taught how to change the strings very early on in our lessons.

I bought a violin for my daughter a few months ago. Her strings were £23 for the full set, and that's for mid-range beginner strings. I refused to buy steel strings for a 5 year old because my ears couldn't cope! I would expect steel strings to be even less .

Her teacher will be able to advise on replacements as you'll want to get something with a similar sound.
