10 Amazing Secrets of Disney's Magic Kingdom

inline image1. A nod to days gone by.
When you are in Liberty Square at the Magic Kingdom take a look at the Liberty Tree, this is a real tree and it has 13 lanterns hung from it's branches, the 13 lanterns represent the original 13 colonies of the USA. The tree was transplanted from another area on Walt Disney World property, it is about 140 years old and weighs around 35 tons.

2. Where are the Restrooms?
Have you ever wondered why there are no Restrooms (apart from those located in full service restaurants) in Liberty Square? Well, in colonial times indoor toilets were not commonplace so the imagineers decided they should be located in the adjacent lands.

3. Mystery letters.
If you visit the Peter Pan Ride look out for some children's building blocks in the first bedroom scene, the blocks are stacked on the floor and the letters on the blocks spell out DISNEY and P-PAN

4. Tribute Windows.
When visiting the Magic Kingdom many people rush through Main Street but if you spend some time exploring Main Street has some secrets to discover. Many of the windows on Main Street have fictitious business names painted on them, the actual names are taken from real people as tributes for some of the people that contributed to the park. Names are still being added to the windows even to this day, however there is a strict criteria that must be met before a name is considered to be added to a window.

5. Not all is as it seems.
Main Street uses a film technique called forced perspective in the design of it's buildings to make the buildings look taller than they actually are. The ground floor is 10ft high, the next floor is 9ft high and the top floor is 8ft high. There is however a couple of buildings that are full scale. The first is Town Square Exhibition Hall (it is full scale to avoid the Contemporary Resort being seen behind) and the other building is the Main Street train station as the upper floor is open to guests.

6. Walt's Family Place.
Main Street is modelled after Marceline, Missouri around the turn of the 20th century. This is where Walt Disney's family lived.

7. Details Details and more Details.
Disney's attention to detail can be seen in the window shutters on some of the buildings in Liberty Square. If you look carefully you will see that the shutters sag. During the revolutionary war metal shutter hinges were replaced with leather ones so the metal could be used for the war effort, the leather hinges stretched with the weight of the shutter and so sagged.

8. Has Aladdin lost something?
In the Main Street Train Station there is a shelf that has some Disney Characters belongings on it such as Aladdin's Lamp. Apparently The telegraph you hear at the train station is tapping out in morse code Walt Disney’s speech at Disneyland’s opening in 1955.

9.When is a Flag not a Flag?
Have you noticed all the American flags on the buildings of Main Street USA. Actually they aren't technically American flags, each flag has less than the required 50 stars which makes them not official US flags. Disney does this to avoid the etiquette associated with the official US Flag such as having to lower them to half mast on the death of a VIP. Additionally each flag pole on the buildings are actually lightning rods.

10. What's in a number?
When you enter the Magic Kingdom look to the left and you will see a Fire Station, it has the number 71 on it, so why 71? well the park opened in 1971.

Do you know any Magic Kingdom secrets do you know?

In Liberty Square the houses have numbers. Put an 18 in front of the numbers and you get the timeframe for that particular building.

The sidewalks on Main Street are red. Walt wanted guests to feel that he had rolled out the 'red carpet' for their arrival.

Columbia Harbor House restaurant is technically located in Fantasyland and Liberty Square. Inside the restaurant, closer to Fantasyland, the restaurant is themed to Europe. As you move through the restaurant and out the door into Liberty Square, the décor changes to early American.

Oh i love this kind of stuff.
The one i like and its more of a question, is how many bricks did it take to build the castle? In fact none as its not made of brick, just made to look like it is

As an add on to Geoffa's fact about the red carpe, Disney consulted Kodak who worked on the exact shade of red to enhance visitors photographs against the surrounding backdrop.

On the Tribute Windows, the highest on Main Street belongs to Frank Wells (a past C.O.O.) due to his love of mountaineering. He actually climbed 6 of the 7 highest mountains in each of the continents one year just failing on Everest.
