Pacific Northwest Aug 2019 - Day 15 Seattle: Pikes Place, Downtown and Baseball

We had all slept well in our cute apartment and enjoyed a lovely breakfast of poached eggs on toast and fresh peaches.

After breakfast we caught the bus to downtown Seattle to walk around the waterfront and visit Pikes Place market. Unfortunately we didn’t love this part of Seattle and to us the city felt like a game of two halves. It was lovely and friendly up in Queen Anne but the downtown was quite grimy and seemed to have a high amount of crazy people around - many seemed really out of it on drugs. The seafront was quite tacky whilst Pikes Place market was packed to the rafters and hard to navigate.

We had a walking tour of the market booked and our guide tried really hard but it was practically impossible to navigate in all the crowds and we ended up shuffling through single file, jostling people on either side of us. There were some great looking food and flower stalls and we got to see the fish throwing and the original Starbucks. However, Seattle is FULL of Starbucks so we couldn’t quite understand why people were queuing up for 2 hours just to get a coffee there. The tour ended at the revolting gum wall - yuck why would people want to do that or see it is beyond me so we quickly headed out of the market to try and get away from the crowds.

We then had a stressful half hour trying to work out where to get the bus back and wandered around various streets of downtown Seattle trying to work it out. Eventually we found the right bus stop and were back in the lovely, serene and friendly Queen Anne district. We had a lovely lunch of toasted sandwiches, warm cookies and iced tea in a friendly and uncrowded Starbucks and reflected on our morning. It was safe to say that we didn’t love Downtown Seattle but we are not great city people so maybe just not our cup of tea.

That afternoon we chilled out reading on the porch before getting changed and heading out to watch Baseball. The journey to the T-Mobile stadium, home of the Seattle Mariners, took about an hour by bus and train but was much easier than driving through the traffic. We arrived early for the game as the ball parks is next to the Seattle Seahawks Football stadium and being big American Football fans we wanted to check it out. We wondered up to the stadium which was very impressive and had a look in the club shop, where I got a t-shirt. We then wondered to the Mariners shop but were glad we had managed to snag much cheaper Mariners t-shirts at Walmart earlier that week.

That night the Mariners were playing the Toronto Blue Jays and it seemed like the whole of Canada had decamped to Seattle as the stadium was packed with Blue Jays fans. We got some great food including Caribbean Pork Sandwich, Pizza and fish and chips. The catering at Baseball is often really good and we do wistfully think of it every time we visit Fratton Park and sample the pitiful catering on offer in the English football league!

The Blue Jays were the favourites and their fans were very noisy but surprisingly the Mariners won. We do enjoy the Baseball and love all the rituals such as singing ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Park’ and the 7th Inning stretch.

We left before the end of the game as we wanted to not be too late in downtown Seattle at night and had to get our bus home from there. The journey back was okay and it did feel quite unsafe in the centre so we were glad to get back to our apartment.

Shame that downtown Seattle wasn’t so nice and your tour was a bit frustrating. I’m not a big Starbucks fan anyway and definitely wouldn’t queue for 2 hours to get in one.! Glad you had fun at the ballgame and had nice food. We’re still haunted by some of the worst hotdogs ever at the Yankees stadium . . .

I wasn’t a huge fan of Seattle outside some of the food and the glass museum. It was disappointing as I had high hopes.

A shame about not enjoying Downtown Seattle. When you've experienced complete serenity in the National Parks, sometimes its just too much being in a bustling city.
The baseball game sounds fun though, we've never been to a sports game in the US so need to rectify that on our next trip!

I think you are totally right, the city was probably just too much after the peace of the national parks. A ballgame is lots of fun and would highly recommend catching one if you can.

It can be quite overwhelming when the crowds are that busy, thankfully you had a great location for your accommodation to retreat too. My boys manage to find baseball whenever we go to the States (Red Sox fans) I just love the atmosphere and the food, that Caribbean Pork Sandwich sounds amazing
