Carers and respite
I intend speaking to social work tomorrow about this but does anyone know if an elderly person who has carers who visit to heat microwave meals and try to get that person to take tablets but whose family do all his other care is entitled to respite care ? We are in Scotland and are have been given different stories by carers company and his doctor. One says we are, the other says not.

If they have an adult care support plan you may be eligible for respite care the local authority has to consider each case individualally
Contact their social worker Carers Act Scotland 2016 will give you more details Edited at 07:26 PM. |

Hi the best thing to do is contact social work and ask for a Carers Assessment, they will do an assessment based on your situation and in your own right.

I have3 times and also been on the care provision side
If I’m honest I really think everyone who’s involved with care t home needs to feel the exhaustion dealing with work family life there own personal issues the frustration when you spend hours on the phone on hold to next in the que but need to hang up because you need to attend to someone/ thing that can’t wait and the loneliest and isolation And resentment and anger and how guilty that can make you feel |

I work in adult social care in Scotland. There is no automatic entitlement to respite, it would depend on the assessment of the cared for person/carer. You are doing the right thing phoning social work.
Could the cared for person manage safely at home without the family support or alternatively a temporary increase in the care package? If not they should be entitled to replacement care/respite. Whether they/you would want respite in a care home in current circumstances is a separate matter. Ask the social worker doing the assessment about "self directed support" if you have other ideas on what would be the best respite for your particular situation. As a family carer you are entitled to an "Adult Carer Support Plan". If you meet the criteria (I'm sure most carers would - ie is caring affecting your health/stress/life balance/work/family life etc) this should result in funding help, could be to pay for some respite or to help you in the caring role in some way (it is meant to be used creatively and flexibly). Depending on where you live there will likely be a carer support organisation to help you through the process. Given Covid 19 unfortunately you may find face to face assessments are on hold unless urgent and there is likely a waiting list. Urgent respite should be available if essential though. Good luck. |

Essentially everyone is 'entitled' to respite care, the crux will be if you need to pay for it or not.
