As someone else has said, the short break P&O cruises did get a bit of a reputation as booze cruises but I think P&O are trying hard to get away from this as they have put in some new rules over the last year or so about no fancy dress and how much of your own alcohol you can bring on board. Might be worth asking something on Cruise Critic Forum to see if anyone has a recent experience to share with you.

Ps we went to Guernsey as part of a bigger cruise and it is so lovely. Had a great day. We had lunch at The Terrace Garden Cafe which had the best views over to the ship and I'd highly recommend it.

Thanks everyone, some definite points to consider. It would be a shame if we couldn't get off the ship as that is something DH would definitely want to do, so might just have a quick look at other options to see what else is available x

Proper cruise ships.

I think they use them to fill gates in the schedule and also to entice people to try it who might then book a longer cruise. So they want you to get the full experience.

Well a little update as things move fast in our house My mum and I looked into a 2 night MSC Cruise to Hamburg but apparently it wasn't a return trip, you had to fly back Yeah right, for a 2 day cruise, no thanks. So we've booked the P & O trip to Bruges for April 10th. The Guernsey trip was a no go as DS didn't want to be away on his 18th birthday so we were quite limited.
My mum is really excited as she has wanted to get us into cruising for ages as I think she envisages us all going on a longer cruise together but DH has been sulking abit as he is adamant he will hate it...we'll see
Then we'll see how our finances are before deciding on our main Summer hols, hopefully Florida

This discussion about mini cruises is all very well but like any addiction it starts with one small step and the next thing you know you have to join Cruisers Anonymous. My name is Omega and I’m a cruiseaholic.

You might be surprised. Lots of people think they will hate cruises but change mind when they there. Do prefer least a week tho

Sorry a bit late to the party here! We are cruisers and love it. I would say, don't necessarily judge cruising off the back of a short cruise- we did a 3 nighter to Bruges with Royal Caribbean and had an amazing time but it felt so busy! We think when the cruise is short everyone is just trying to cram everything in those few days. We even stayed on board on the second port day expecting it to be quiet and it felt like 90% of the passengers had the same idea! It also seemed like everyone was in the party spirit, we found the nightlife much more active and loud- not exactly rowdy but there was a contingent of stag and hens on board.

Longer cruises feel way more relaxed and quiet in my experience. On a 10 nighter it feels okay to just spend a whole day lazing around on a sun bed not doing a lot and it seems other people follow suit.

But as I say we still had an amazing time- we got into the spirit of the short cruise and attended all the late night parties, tried to do all the activities and didn't stop for 3 days! That cruise broke us lol.

In Bruges we booked a tour through the ship which was about £50 and very worth it- it included coach transport in, a walking tour, a boat tour and about 2-3 hours of free time. It was a fantastic way to see Bruges- if its your first time I wouldn't recommend trying to do it on your own as there's so much to see and hear about.

Thanks everyone, my dad hated cruising until my mum talked him into one a few years ago, now they are both obsessed. Not sure my DH will go this way though as currently he is still sulking as he doesn't want to go
And yes I did have a little look at what trips would be offered so maybe this might tempt DH to be a bit more enthusiastic if we get off the ship for a few hours
