I agree with Rose89, AVOID Tenderloin area

I stayed at Travelodge by Wyndham by Fisherman's Wharf which is a motel less thn 10 minutes walk from the main part of Fishermans Wharf. San Francisco Marriott Fisherman's Wharf, Hyatt Centric Fishermans Wharf San Francisco and Holiday Inn Express & Suites San Francisco Fishermans Wharf are all in the same area.

As a solo female traveller I felt this area was great to stay in. I walked to Pier 33 for the Alcatraz ferry and I walked from Pier 33 up to Pier 39 shopping and restaurants and then all along The Embarcadero and then back to Travelodge.

I only had 2 days in San Francisco so I need to go back again to see more.

After considering journey time into the city from emeryville, I’ve booked the motor inn instead. Trade off is losing the pool access and breakfast however the location is much better and will allow us to maximise time sightseeing. $200 cheaper also. Thanks to OP and all who contributed to this post for the very helpful info.
