If you are wanting to get out of the city in your car. About 2 hours south of DC there is Williamsburg which is a colonial town / museum. And also a Busch gardens theme park.

We are in Washington at the moment and having a fab time, we did the Pentagon tour yesterday and have been to the zoo today and seen Tian Tian the panda. We are heading to the monuments and Holocaust museum tomorrow. The metro is fantastic and so easy to use, we have got some bargains from the malls and enjoying a slower pace as we have just come from NYC.
