We also use packing cubes to compress the stuff in as it means we can squash more in.

Thank you for for the replies - lots of useful info.
Another question... How likely are we to be made to check our wheelie cases onto the hold at the gate. I've seen this being done by Delta whilst waiting to board internal flights. Also we were on KLM to Amsterdam from our local airport on our first flight of 3. They announced "due to restricted space in the overhead bins only the first 60 passengers will be able to board with a bag that won't fit under the seat". At this everyone jumped up and mobbed the gate. We were at the back of the line but as we only had one overhead bag I was prepared to argue as there seemed to be quite a few small elephants being lugged on. Turns out it wasn't an issue but do you think it would be wise to have 2 cases that could go in the hold if pressed? |

I use packing cubes. I pack one medium one with flight stuff in. If I get asked to put my case in the hold I whip out the packing cube and stash it under the seat in front. They have handles so it works fine. The others can generally go in the hold. I put stuff like medicines, key docs, as well as "I want them for the flight" stuff in the packing cube just in case. To be fair in most instances you can take a second bag on the flight and I can squeeze the majority of priority stuff into that.

Sounds like a daft question but does the case dimension have to include the wheels, as my case is just over 55cm in height but this includes the wheels

Flying hand luggage saves money and head space in so many ways. It's a really great experience. Makes you really think what you need, stops you going out and just buying things to take to wear that you never do and allows your mind to be free from 'stuff'
You can simply get off the plane and leave the airport, you've in the car hire line, on public transport or in your own car while others are hanging around. We have done touring holidays, villas and apartments and hotels with hand luggage. It's the way to go. |

We just flew hand luggage only last Sunday and are still in Florida now... 2nd time we’ve done it. There’s 3 of us and we each have a cabin sized case plus a small handbag. I pack enough for 7 days and then just wash it and/or buy other T-shirt’s... When we landed we were off the plane super fast and as husband holds an American passport, we zoomed through security and straight to the main arrival hall and to the garage. On the first night we popped into Publix and bought shampoo and everything else we needed. So much easier and stress free. Hate that wait for bags at the end of a long flight.

Our transfer time in Atlanta has changed from 2 hours 40 minutes to just over 2 hours so at least we won't be hanging about waiting for our cases to appear.
Good idea about the packing cubes. |
