Using miles to upgrade - Virgin
In the T&C's it says...
Flying Co miles can be spent on upgrades when purchasing a qualifying Economy (Y,B,R,L,U,M,E,Q,X) or Premium (W,S,H,K) fare. ...my question is, how do you know what code you are buying before you actually book? |

I think it tells you in the fare breakdown but if I’m using miles I tend to just phone Flying Club and explain what I want to do.

Thanks Lisa, in the fare breakdown for the flight I'm looking at in September it says the flight code is OKUL5SMX. I haven't got a clue how that would fit in with the above

Me neither. I think if you choose the fully flexible option that will cover it. You do usually find though that fares upgradable with miles are ridiculously expensive so for me i would have to have enough to upgrade to upper before it would be worth it. We enquired once and I think the economy fare was about £300 more pp for upgradable.

Thanks again, I do wish these things were a bit more transparent. I always end up thinking I must be dim ... maybe I am

This question was answered on V-Flyer a few weeks ago. Someone posted a link to a document for travel agents (which I am not allowed to post here as I am too new!)
Deciphering the 8 characters is quite complex, but the key points are as follows. The first letter is the Fare Code (or Class) Y, B, R, L, U, M, E, Q, X, N, O Y is the most expensive 'fully flexible' ticket. O is the cheapest, most restrictive ticket. Classic and Delight can have any of the 11 fare codes. Light is limited to the last 4 (Q, X, N, O). The 7th character denotes the brand: Economy Delight - C Economy Classic - M Economy Light - B Hence OKUL5SMX means you are in Classic with fare code O. |

Same here. Not just flights. Any queries I have relating to any aspect of a holiday I just ring the relevant company be it Disney, the airline, insurance company or whoever.

I read the same thread as ManCity on V-Flyer and still didnt understand half of it, so God knows how newbies sort their system out!
Like Andybear I tend to ring if I want to know anything & usually twice with Virgin as half the time the first 'operative' you get doesn't actually know the answer anyway!
