Same as everywhere I and my Mum ever worked - i wondered if it’s a regional thing - I.min the north west and nobody would think anything of the term ‘girls’ referring to adult female colleagues around here. I never for one moment thought the OP was referring to a child in her care.

Going off track but have you heard of the ‘Love Box’ poem? Many years ago, a good friend gave me a small gift wrapped box with this poem attached - to help me through a difficult time. Just thought it might be a good idea?

‘This is a very special gift
That you can never see,
The reason it’s so special
It comes to you from me.
Whenever you are lonely or even feeling blue
You only have to hold this gift
To know I think of you.
You never can unwrap it
Please leave the ribbon tied
You only have to hold this gift
It’s filled with love inside.’

I am familiar with expressions such as “girls night out” or “boys night out” of course. But if I were discussing the mental health of one of my male colleagues I would not dream of saying “one of the boys at work is struggling with his mental health”. I hope we are well past infantilising women in the workplace and OP was really talking about a child in the nursery.
I’m the opposite. I’d hate anyone to call me a woman, it feels so elderly. Maybe it’s a regional thing like a previous poster said, but I didn’t assume the OP was writing a poem and getting a gift for a two year old with mental health issues.

Sorry yes I mean a staff member, where we are we call them girls.

And yes was going to change the “pills” to something else, as you said it wasn’t appropriate so have that in hand.

Thanks for the ideas on the verse I want to take out though x

I'm intrigued now as to whether 'the girls' is a regional term. I'm North West based as well and even at my age (48) wouldn't feel offended if it was was used.
My friend owns a nursery and know she uses it referring to her staff.
The only other term I could think you would use it 'the team' which I actually think sounds impersonal in this use!
I think 'the girls' feels quite a caring term!
I certainly didn't think the op was referring to a child as she would more likely said 'one of the children/babies'.
