When we had out building done we had fencing done. £2100. 25m to 2.1m vertical boards - both sides. Concrete posts. and included removing the old hedge and taking everything away. I thought that was expensive but went with it as the builder was on site and it would be a real pain to have it done afterwards. But my neighbour paid half so wasn't too bad.

My final post on this. Like the pun!

Bear in mind concrete posts don’t look brilliant. For looks and a seamless appearance wooden posts are better.
Ok you may only get 10 years out of them but you can Kango one out and put a new one in situ in an hour max.

I completely agree that wooden posts look better. My dad had a fencing company and he will turn in his grave that we are looking at the concrete ones. OH isn’t able to do repair jobs himself and we are looking for something to last longer than ten years that we will be able to easily repair/replace by ourselves or at least get repairs done cheaply as we don’t have many working years left and have very sad looking pensions! It’s really become more a case of how can we keep future maintenance costs down than aesthetics.

I totally agree. So we had our concrete posts hidden.

I just wanted to say that we have featherboard fencing (I think that's what it's called) Our house in now nearly 18 years old, and the fence is still going strong. It doesn't have any concrete at all, it's wooden posts and continuous featherboard. Our fence has taken a massive pounding over the years, you wouldn't believe how many times it's been smacked with a football, but it's still standing. None of the posts have rotted, where we live the fences were all put up at the same time, and I don't know anyone who has had to have a new fence yet.

If you do break a strip of the featherboard it is very easy to replace. In my opinion it does look a lot nicer than concrete posts and gravel boards.

This is the quote - for 6 panels. Does it seem a fair price ? (Seems a bit much to me )

Thanks as always

Hopefully you've got some other ideas to compare now.

Just wanted to add a word of warning. We used a local company (the name of our town and then 'fencing' at the end of their name). They wrecked our garden, wrecked our neighbours garden and left the job half finished. Also used cheaper materials than quoted. Promised me the earth and never did any if it. Sadly gave up fighting them after a year. My friend had a dreadful experience too.

Good luck! x

Our fence has been up nearly 20 years so it has done quite well. Like yours it’s featherboard. We live next to a wildlife/natural area and get a lot of visitors burrowing under the fence. I’m told the concrete gravel boards can be set lower to prevent the visitors and the flora and fauna creeping under. Less so with wooden gravel boards because they rot if they are set too far into the ground.

Actually it was my next door neighbour who got the quote, and I’m a bit “suspicious” 🙄.

I will get my own quote, no rush because I don’t want anyone doing work here during ‘lockdown’.

Thanks everyone.
