New Orleans. I did a quick 3 day visit just to have a look and its one of the places I really want to return to. There is so much history and its a great mix of old and new. The heat and humidity are harsh in the summer, though.

How about Boston coupled with a few extra days in Cape Cod.

We did it in a strange way though. Flew to Boston and stayed in the centre for 2 or 3 days then flew to San Francisco for a week then back to Boston and drove to Cape Cod via Plymouth Rock.

Boston very walkable (although we did use the subway over to Harvard for a stroll). Cape Cod very pretty and pretty English in town names.

Lots of history and a shorter flight.

Echo the Boston and Cape Cod suggestion, weve done that twice.

We also did a New Year break in Chicago a few years ago and enjoyed that, although it was ridiculously cold.

We werent huge fans of Philadelphia if Im honest.

Boston would be my suggestion. Or LA, San Diego, Chicago, Las Vegas, Miami, New Orleans...

TBH, if I was booking a USA city break I would choose based on flight prices and hotel prices. Were not very flexible on dates due to school holidays so price is an important factor. Also, the season that youre going would play a part in decision making - I wouldnt go to Chicago in the winter (too cold), Vegas or New Orleans in the height of summer (too hot), Boston is beautiful in the autumn and Miami is perfect for winter sun.

Another vote for Boston and if time permits Cape Cod. Lots to see and do in Boston and most of it is walkable.
