Where To Buy A New Sofa From?

Our sofa is on its last legs, it was a cheap one bought from an on-line store, so never seen or sat one. This time we would like to go for a better quality one that will last. Where is the best place to go? Ideally want to look at it and sit on it (obviously when we can)

I don't want to say it is the "best" place to go, but I quite like Next furniture, I currently have three of their armchairs which we are pleased with. My nearest Next Home is not especially large but it has enough out to inspect.

our new one should be arriving sometime this week hopefully. been wanting a new one for a few years now, but couldnt find anything that i liked

we got it from a local place... frankknighton/

but the sofa we bought is (custom) made by ROM.

romsofas/

(could be worth looking for a local supplier of theirs)

We bought a new sofa and 2 arm chairs 6 years ago, at the time we looked around all the usual big name furniture stores. We finally found a sofa we both liked in Furniture Village for around £3500, they still sell it now.

We then went home and DH googled the name of the sofa, it came up on a furniture outlet warehouse website in Rochdale. We travelled up there the following weekend and bought the same sofa and 2 chairs for approximately £2000, considerably less than in Furniture Village. They were all brand new, not damaged in any way and the guys delivering them were very professional. They also deliver miles away, we are over and hour and half from them.

I appreciate you may not live anywhere near Rochdale, but check in your local area for furniture outlet warehouses. I would go and visit all the big name sofa stores and then google the one you decide on, it may well be on sale for a lot less in a outlet store.

Ours are cream leather and 6 years old now and still look almost brand new.

Edited - not sure why warehouse website comes up with a link, we certainly didn't get it from there.

I am not sure whereabouts you are but this place lawtonsfurniture are in Birkenhead on the Wirral (they also have store in Flint, North Wales but the biggest outlet is Birkenhead). they manufacture for M&S, John Lewis, Next etc and they have hundreds of sofas that are less than half the store price. I have two large M&S sofas in one lounge and a Next sofa in my smaller lounge and along with a footstool and various other bits and pieces from there I paid less than £2K for all of it. They are really lovely to deal with too. I wouldn't go anywhere else these days.

We bought our last sofa on line, could have been a big mistake but turned out fine. It's a retro Danish design and was shipped from Holland to us. Rediculous thing to do really.

I want a new settee too and have been scouring web sites - the one I have is c15 years plus but been in store for over 9 years - it is dated i my view but the shop I got it from safe still selling “vintage’ leather sofas very similar as mine for over £7k but for me I want fabric and not leather so it has resale value (I expect)

Many years ago I bought a Next sofa bed and it was really comfortable and is still going strong as I “donated” to friends when I bought the said leather one and I bought it in c1995ish - Next is a contender.

Looking at the is thread with real interest - it has to be delivered to my sitting room, or one moved and put in place etc - no door step delivery for me (thats essential) and be of natural colour but the rest is up for grabs ...

Whatever you do don’t buy Ercol. We bought a sofa and chair last year and it is rubbish to be honest. I thought Ercol was a good make but it really isn’t. I complained and got new padding for the chair after someone came and inspected but that hasn’t lasted well. It’s just over a year old and we are sagging.

I have an Ercol chair that belonged to my grandparents, we have had it recovered, it is the most comfortable chair
