Diego Maradona

Died after a heart attack apparently.

Great player with a self-destructive streak like so many sadly.

Never far from controversy, but one of the best players the world has seen.

As a 17 year old there was an agreement for him to sign for Sheffield Utd for £400,000, but it fell through at the last minute.

Then in 1982 he came close to signing for Arsenal but the move was allegedly blocked by the FA fearful of a backlash after the Falkland war

Players are defined by moments within a career.

I can forget that he cheated to punch the ball into the net against England.

I can never forgive his smug lack of remorse in the aftermath. ‘The hand of god’ and all that. My disdain for him has never diminished in the years since.

I am indifferent to his demise. He had a talent that nobody else has had before or since, but chose Cocaine instead. I was far more saddened by the demise of Nobby Styles a few weeks back. He never had a millionth of Maradona’s talent, but maximised everything that he did have through hard work and dedication.

Strange coincidence it's on the 15th anniversary of George Best's death too.

Only here really. The most infamous World Cup goal and, arguably, the best in the same game.

I recommend the recent documentary if you get the chance, puts his life into some context without covering up the lows and self inflicted wounds.

A controversial character indeed but one of the best players, if not the best the world has seen.
I feel privileged to have seen him play.

A moment in a game that should be remembered for his brilliance.

I doubt there would be many players who wouldn’t have done the same. And at the end of the day - there was a referee and 2 linesmen!

He is only famous for cheating as he was the best in the world, and it was against Engalnd!

Plenty of lesser footballers have done the same and much worse. And off the pitch, who knows the full story, but is he that far apart from the cheeky chappy George Best or Gazza...both chucked away their talents too, and I don't think all their antics were just laddish behaviour...

Whatever you think of the guy, he was in the top 2 footballers to have walked the planet. A total footballing genius.
