Another word for our Eng v Scot debates

DD was telling me about her friends reaction when she said she wanted to go and clap a lovely dog that was passing 😂 They’re English and were like ‘Clap ? You pet a dog ‘
So she asked me why we say clap and I’ve no idea 😄 Pet is a more obvious word but we’ve always said clap so I’m sticking to it 😂

So Dibbers what word do you use to clap/pet/stroke your pets ?

Yeah, I ask where do you stay when I’m home but change it to live when I’m at the boat or on holiday so people understand me 😄

I would clap the dog.

I would also ask where do you stay!

I hug a dog (I think it is my American influence) but my parents used to say clap and pat (Scottish)

I've needed a "talk slow" sign for the last 46 years since I met my Glaswegian MIL.
"How no" is now her favourite when we tell her she cant do something. You know like this morning "You cant go the Bingo Jeannie"
"How no! "

🤣

The only clap in my house was "a clap or a skelp roond the lugs" if we were cheeky or naughty!
Lugs = ears!
