Kyoto accommodation

Thinking of 2 nights in Kyoto. Any recommendations? Like the idea of a ryokan but bit worried about futons (I say futon is Japanese for backache!)

I saw doombuggy’s post about Dejavu ryokan and looked it up - wow, I am in love! If budget allowed I would love to stay there! But cheaper recommendations are welcome too.

My son is staying next week in hotel sunline gion kyoto.
We have been told it’s very good. And the area has lots to see and do.
Geishas in abundance and plenty of temples.

Genuine Japanese futons are not like "Japanese" futons found elsewhere! I really enjoyed sleeping on them and I would never sleep on one of those wooden pallet ideas that many places outside Japan try to pass off as a futon! You basically sleep on a cushion on top of a tatami mat. We did not get to do a proper Ryokan, as we had out 6 year old with us and struggled to find family friendly places, but we did stay in a a couple of Japanese style accommodations.

We used AirBnB in Kyoto in April. This was prior to the new regulations coming in, but that issue does seem to be sorted - if a room is available on there now it will be properly registered. (The one we stayed in already was and had all the certifications displayed). We were a few minutes from Fushimi-Inari. If you want to climb to the top then it definitely pays to set off early to get ahead of the crowds, so staying close is advantageous. It also gave us good access to both the JR and Keihan lines. The JR line will take you to Kyoto main station and the Keihan line is a direct link to Gion (the Geisha district).

There is absolutely tons to do in Kyoto - I really loved it there and keen to go back!

We've booked a regular hotel for our quick visit to Kyoto - the Granvia Kyoto, we've stayed in the Hiroshima Graniva before and it was great. I think they only do western beds and the hotel is located inside the actual JR train station so its easy to get to/from your shinkansen if thats the way you're travelling.

Can't help too much with ryokan, my fiancé has tattoos and they're generally against the rules.

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto in 2015; it’s right next door to the Buddhist temple with 1,001 statues and if you’re planning to use local buses for sightseeing, the concierge desk sells the day passes and there’s a stop right outside.
