I used them last year with no problem but I was travelling solo so not sure about rejoining your family, except at the gate. Last year my taxi driver helped me put my suitcase on a trolley and I used that to help me into the airport (I can walk short distances with either a stick or a supermarket trolley!). Once checked in there is an assistance area near the entrance door where you book in and wait until there is a wheelchair free. I waited for about half an hour and then got taken through security and left at the gate for my flight (from memory of previous trips this is where you would rejoin your family). BTW although you book assistance through your airline they don’t actually supply the assistance; this is through a separate company.

I’m a wheelchair user who travels domestically in and out of Glasgow Airport about once a month. As previously mentioned, it’s the airport or their Special Assistance contractor who provides assistance, not the airlines, although it’s the airlines you book through.

The area where you make yourself known to staff is fairly well-signposted. The times I’ve travelled with other people, they’ve been allowed to come through security with me, and even though I get a pat-down (there’s no sense in a metal wheelchair going through a metal detector) which takes longer, my travelling companions just wait on the other side of security and we all go to the gate together, with Special Assistance pushing me.

You don’t go through secret parts of the airport that people who don’t need Special Assistance are barred from, even when accompanied by an employee 😜
