Virgin reward flights - school holidays

I managed to get 7 return reward flights for last August from LGW direct to MCO and then again for this year for 6 of us, just book one leg at a time.

I've never done that, but I know others do.

I guess if you can't get any return you want then you just cancel that outward leg, which I believe you can do for no/minimal cost.
