Krakow Sept 2019 - Day 2

Previous day is here

Krakow Day 2 Saturday 21st September

We had been recommended to try Charlotte for breakfast so that’s what we woke up to do we got up early and ordered an Uber. In hindsight we should have walked but we still weren’t familiar with our bearings fully just yet. The uber driver ripped us off though he took us all over, we only realised this when we came out from breakfast and realised how close to the main square we were, oh well never mind. Breakfast was nice we had wanted to try the famous bread basket but we weren’t feeling it to be honest the service wasn’t great and we felt a bit rushed so we just ordered coffee and pastries and left feeling a bit disappointed. We walked out and there was this beautiful water feature that we stopped to read for a bit

Todays plan was to explore the jewish quarter and we set off walking in that direction just taking in the buildings and nipping in a couple of shops it was a lovely morning.

we got to the bridge which goes over into the Jewish quarter called Lovers bridge which had these unusual figures on and it was full of padlocks.

We carried on walking as we wanted to see the ghetto heroes square which we found quite easily with the help of google maps. A lot of the surrounding areas were under construction so roadways were torn up and a lot was closed but we still managed to see what we wanted to see. This was a really unusual feature of 33 chairs but it has a really important back story which you can read about to the side of the chairs.

We decided to head to Plac Nowy for some lunch and we both tried the Zapienkanka which was basically this huge baguette cut in half with whatever toppings you wanted they were huge and around 8 zloty each so cheap. These were so good there was again a huge crowd around here so you know its good.

we had seen this electric scooters all over the place with people riding them so we looked into trying one of these, wow we were hooked we used them every day after that they were super easy to use and we got around so much quicker on them not to mention they were so much fun. I think they worked out at 0.50 zloty per minute

We decided to zip alongside the Vistula river in the direction of Wawel castle as we wanted to have a look round the castle. We had loads of fun zooming down here and we were there in no time, the banks of the Vistula river are beautiful with loads going on and specific paths for the scooters it was lovely

We got to the castle and left our scooters you just tap them out on the App on your phone and it ends the rental. We paid for our tickets to the castle, it was 5 zloty for the tower and 5 zloty for the dragons den. the entrance to the castle is lovely

We didn’t do it all as we didn’t have time but we did Sandomierska Tower which was a beautiful building that had some beautiful views from the top of it.

We wandered around the castle grounds there are lots of different exhibits that you can pay to go in which were all reasonably priced the most expensive being no more than 30 zloty but we just wanted to walk around looking at the buildings.

We finished off with the dragons den. We could have kicked ourselves as we just could not seem to find the dragon which lies down there so we gave up in the end. We should have just asked someone really. Still it was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours and we managed to get a pic of the dragon statue on the way out.

. This place is really beautiful and there are toilets which is a bonus as there are not many in Krakow for Public use they even check your receipt in Mcdonalds.
We zipped back to the main square on our scooters and dropped them off, so we could have a wander round the cloth market, it’s nice in here and full of little stalls selling things. We had a drink in one of the bars and decided to get something to eat as it was getting a bit late by this point. We decided to head to the little market place Darren got a bratwurst sausage which was nice but expensive for what it was really , theres some lovely food stalls here and of course mulled wine stalls.

we also got a really nice chicken kebab from just down the side of the hard rock café. If you fancy one whilst in Krakow this is the place to head super fresh and tasty. We’re not kebab eaters really but had walked past this place so many times and it always had a que and smelt amazing.
We took some more pictures in the square including this statue Eros Bendato , there’s not much information relating to this which would have been nice to know at the time.

Time to head back again after another full day, we wanted a decent sleep tonight as we were up early for our trip to Auschwitz, we headed to our local shop for a couple of beers and also popped in to a bakery on the way home to pick up some sandwiches for our lunch tomorrow. Hopped on a scooter and we were home in 5 minutes. Another fantastic day.
