Yes I have. In Surrey a couple of times only short four day retreats and designed for those with none to some experience of Buddhism. They were both great retreats. Four days was plenty for a “beginner”, and you really don’t need to know much about Buddhism to get a lot out of them although I imagine a little knowledge would help.

I’d also guess they are all very different and focus on different things as different groups have different approaches and sometimes beliefs. So if you can find out a bit more about the group holding them and see if you can go along to some other sessions.

I went to retreats organised by the Croydon Buddhist Centre which was around 10 minutes walk from where I lived at the time. It’s more “Western” than “Traditional” in its approach. It may suit you or it may not, but you can find out more about all the retreats of that group here

This is just outside Lockerbie in the Scottish borders. I had to visit them a few times to chat about work permits they had for overseas monks. They are wonderful people and do a range of courses and retreats.

The place is just lovely. You happen upon it in the middle of the countryside and when I was there, even though it was a serious matter, it was so calming and peaceful. The place has a lovely wee team room for those people who just want to pay a visit too and look around.
