though my lot didnt go to see santa(teenagers) I did book Rovaniemi independently - they did a stop in Helsinki on the way . Stayed in Rovaniemi town centre and used bus from airport and up to Santa's village. They visited there , they went to Husky place and had a ride and also did half day snow mobiling . Though it was quite expensive for a short break it wasn't anywhere near the 3/4 thousand ! they went in Feb with loads of snow but didnt manage to see Northern lights.

Booked Santa, snowmobile, husky and reindeer rides all via Inghams.
Booked night in a glass igloo direct independently.
Booked trip to icehotel through tourist centre.
Went to fireworks on the slopes on new years eve and visited water world pool incl outdoor Hot tubs on New Year’s Day.
I also worried about missing the magic and no we didn’t have elves on the plane or Xmas songs or anything which my friend who did a tUI 3 night package had. But would I swap what we did for the cost we paid? Absolutely not. It was everything I hoped and more, best holiday ever and it was the snow and scenery that made it magical not Santa.
Loving the sounds of this!

We did Rov. It was incredible. Loads of snow and really magical... hotel was like a huge log cabin. Did a candlelight husky trip through the woods, used snow skis, did lots of tobogganing and the elves were brilliant. Met the man himself and his wife popped in for biscuit making. Just wonderful. 5 days. Kids were 5 and 8 (now 17 and 15 and still talk about it!)

We have been to rovaniemi and going again just after christmas - we book direct flights with Norwegian, accommodation through booking.com and all excursions through local companies- we absolutely love it and is one of our favourite places we have visited - but we have never done a package there so no idea if we are missing out on a better experience by doing it that way! Sorry to be of little help!

We did do a package trip through Canterbury Travel - best holiday I've ever had. It was a wish trip though, so we didn't pay for it! We flew into Rovaniemi and stayed in Luosto, a tiny place but so magical and we got to see those elusive northern lights as it was so dark there. My kids really loved the Santa element and elves but it would have still been lovely without them. Dying to go back one day

When we visited Santa we did snow shoeing, feeding reindeer, cooking sausages on a fire, games with elves and private meeting with the big man so for those 3 hours it was the full on experience. I do wonder whether not having an elf named Twinkle escorting us for the entire trip contributed to those being the things they rave about more than Santa but we did do a lot more for our money than doing a complete package so I was happy to forego Twinkle for having a week there. Only you can decide how important the full experience with gala dinner on last night etc is. Our experience was maybe more authentic and less commercialised but my friend also had an amazing time with the TUI package so either way I think you’ll love it.
Maybe too nosey, but how much was the costs of each trip?(if you know of course)

My mum has offere to pay for our family to go to Lapland, so I’m looking into all the different options.

Probably not the reply you want because we did the trip last year with Santa's Lapland. It was all planned out from the minute we got off the plane. It was absolutely magical, but I'm guessing we paid a hell of a lot more than if we'd have gone DIY. We stayed in saariselka, which is really far north, had all activities included, snow gear and meals. It cost just under £4k for 2 nights for 5 people. It was by far the most magical trip I've ever done. We've done Florida loads but I actually think I have post Lapland blues more than I got post Florida blues.

We went in 2015. At the time a 3/4 night trip with TUI was something like £3500 including food, taster sessions of each activity for 2 adults 2 kids. The 4 night trip had a free day where you could buy a longer trip of any of the taster sessions or pay to ski or just play in the snow for free. We would’ve had to miss some of school as it was only during the run up to Xmas.
We paid £3000 for our 7 night stay with Inghams over new year, so didn’t miss any of school but this didn’t include anything. This was in a log cabin so self catering, we sometimes ate out, sometimes bought pizzas etc from supermarket and ate in. We then booked everything separately and they were around £120-150 each trip for 4 people but were the full trips not just tasters. All in it cost us around £6000 for 1 week, 4 people including flights, accommodation, trips, food, travelling to Manchester airport by train plus night in hotel there. We did stuff we couldn’t have done on the TuI trip like a night in a glass igloo which cost around £600 so this bumped cost up a lot. It was the most expensive per night holiday we’ve ever done, even more than Florida, but for us it was once in a lifetime and we wanted to do everything we could. Only thing missing was the northern lights didn’t play for us. If we had done the TUI 3/4 night trip it would’ve been cheaper overall but would’ve cost more per night and we wouldn’t have had time to do everything we wanted.

Also to add to the costs, if you re not skiers, you have to have good ski wear, ski pants and jacket (this is general walk about clothing) as the temperatures are below freezing. About 5 years ago it was -27. You also need good snow boots, base layer clothing ie: thermal base layer and mid layer top. Good ski gloves or mittens.

We did a package with TUI a few years ago and went to Saariselka it was absolutely amazing. We went to see santa, taster reindeer, husky and snowmobile rides. We did then book extras through TUI. However there was places in Saariselka where you could book these various trips.

I did look at going diy again but could never tee it up with work. I looked at booking flights with various companies such as finnair & easyjet. You can also fly to helsinki and get the night train however I always like the idea flying to Kittla for Levi or Ivalo for Saariselka.

Rovenemi didnt really appeal as when we were in Lapland one of the reps said it was really commercialised and we wanted more of an unspoilt true Lapland experiance.
