***Update***

Called 5 companies, only 2 could fit a new boiler before Christmas. Both came out and gave us different suggestions and very different prices. DH not happy with either so I have called another 2 companies. DH then says we can manage with heaters and the fire until January if necessary - easy for him to say going to a nice warm office each day plus I feel like I'm living in the dark ages having to clean the fireplace each morning. If that is how he feels then he can not only foot the bill for the extra electricity but put up with me going out every day to a coffee shop to keep warm. Not a happy bunny

My father was very proud of his 1970's boiler that we inherited with the house (that's War Babies for you !) even managing to keep in going 16 years plus after it was condemned !
We replaced it with a Grant boiler - all good so far after 6 years.

However as someone has pointed out that proper insulation of your walls, floor & ceiling is really what you should focus on. We have had the walls of our old property dry lined & superquilt ... OMG ... what a difference !
Our once freezing house with high ceilings is super toasty with the minimum of heating.

After my little hissy fit, we spoke to the 2 who had done the quotes and asked for more details. We have now decided to go for an external Worcester Bosch which comes with a 7 year warranty and will be fitted on Friday. We will have to put up with temporary pipes around the wall of the conservatory but that is a minor inconvenience compared to the cold!

We would have had it repaired if we could have but a split water jacket apparently is the end! It was also the fact that current regulations mean that the flue is no longer compliant and we had to have it resited that caused the main headache! Could have done with being told that on the survey and not just that it was an old boiler and flagged as amber not even red!

According to the surveyor it has got good insulation, including cavity wall insulation. Although the windows are old they are still double glazed. When we do the work we are hoping that making the conservatory a proper room with a proper roof will help as will converting the garage into the kitchen. And I'm not underestimating what the new properly fitting front door will do to the hallway temp as the 1/2 inch gap all round the current one can't be keeping much heat in

We installed a new oil boiler nearly 3 years ago. We have a 1850L tank and were going through 2.5 fills a year on average. We also had all of our loft space insulated.
The difference is immense, we are now averaging 2 fills a year and the house is so much warmer. We have seen a big difference in the efficiency of the new boiler.

In depths of winter, our 1100 litre tank can be trained in a little over 2 months. But as said above, you need like for like comparisons. We know that nearly half this consumption is down to the Aga and it’s an old largish house with rubbish efficiency! We will be getting doubled glazed windows soon.

On the plus side, we can through May-Sep without losing a single bar on the meter.

We're about to have a new system installed next week and have gone for an external boiler, it was what the engineer recommended and we're thrilled to have the extra cupboard space we will gain when the old water tank is removed.

Interesting to see the varying amounts of oil being used though. We've suffered the past few weeks at -7 with no heating, so planning to be like a sauna when we're fixed!

Oh no and we thought we had it bad but not even had a frost yet - you must be made of sterner stuff than us We debated about changing the whole system but will do that when we do the major building work next year, just wanted to be warm again now!

Is yours fitted?

We had our done on Friday, gosh the lads worked hard, really pleased with the company we picked. The house is lovely and toasty but we still lit the fire

On the oil front - turns out our tank was bone dry despite the gauge showing it was a third full. Luckily a local company were able to deliver the next day. They are also going to fit a new sight gauge for me as it is clouded up. We now wonder if it was running out of oil that broke the boiler or whether the boiler was even broken? Either way we needed a new boiler anyway so now it is done. Interestingly the chap who came out to try and fix it checked the oil level and he said our oil was ok! Now we have no idea how much oil was in the tank when we moved in even though we checked it. Would have been nice for the previous owners to tell us when it was last filled so we would have had a rough idea

Yes we've now had heat since Thursday, and it's wonderful! The house has been like a sauna, I keep turning it down.

The house is a right mess tho, holes in the walls and loose flooring, lots to do to fix it.

Random question, do you have a padlock on your tank? The guys told us to do that asap as oil theft is a thing.
