I would honestly say 8 nights in Tokyo is too many unless you are planning on visiting any of the surrounding areas. I did 5 nights and had a full day trip to Mt Fuji and felt like I did all the sights

I would tend to agree, you should look at buying a rail pass before you go and planing trips out of the city... have a look at
Hakone - excellent views of Fuji Nikko - mountains, temples, waterfall Nagano - snow monkeys Yokohama and further afield - Kyoto, Osaka, etc... |

A week in Tokyo i would get train pass a week in Tokyo would be to much use it as a base and do day trips so many easy to get to on the bullet train Nikko is one Kamakura and Hakone check out Japan visitor and other sites so many places to see.
