I religously do the maths every year. Total waste of my time!
The DDP as a DVC Owner is a total waste of money. I can never get it to work out in my favour albeit we never touch desserts so that could be the issue. TIW all day long for us, now that is a bargain. Oh for those DDP days back many years ago when the appetiser and tip was also included

I wonder if being dessert eaters (yum ), big fans of steak and loving character meals will be the deciding factor...

It could be. We are fish lovers so that tend to drop the bill. Also don't forget there is an alcoholic drink as well now so that needs to be factored in.

We've added DDP on both times we rented points, and when we used our own points for the first time last year. We are 2 adults 1 child, do lots of character meals and like desserts It's always been worth it for us.
However, this year will be last year that DD is a Disney child, so I don't know if it will be worth it ... and we may not do as many character meals as DD gets older.

Essentially you can only get DDP to pay if doing a lot of character meals/ buffets and would genuinely pick the most expensive stuff on the menu. We don't get desserts for the adults , but I save about £500 a week paying cash compared to dining plan.
There was a big poll on Disney Vacation Club Neighbourhood Facebook , about 500 voted from memory, about 22% said they went for dining plan. It's simply because so many DVC owners can't make it pay.

We have never added the DDP (18years of DVC) - could never make the numbers stack up. Mind you we do usually have some meals in the room but now DS is older that may change so I will look at it again for our next trip.
