Mobile Golden caster sugar, anyone got any?

Bit of a strange one this, but I've got a bag of it in my cupboard and unfortunately unsure how old it is. It is opened but has a clippy seal on it. It smells odd, I cannot even describe it but I was hoping if anyone had a bag and it was open if you could see if yours smells too.. don't laugh lol

I really want to make a baked cheesecake and debating whether I need to throw it out and track down a new bag (that will be fun, not!). Not sure whether substituting just normal caster sugar will effect the cheesecake and it would be awful if it tasted different to normal.

x

Ive got Tesco’s own golden caster sugar. Bought 2 bags at the beginning of lockdown. It has been open a few weeks. It smells of molasses

It’s the only caster sugar we’ve had, and baked buns, biscuits and a lovely birthday cake with it, no difference in taste. Also did meringue and they were more of a yellow colour than normal caster sugar, that’s the only difference

I've just smelt the bag I've got - it does have a bit of a smell but I think it's normal. I don't think mine is that old but I've cut the top of the bag off so I can't see the sell by date.

If in doubt, use normal caster sugar - I don't think it'd make that much difference.

Got a bag in my cupboard open with a cilp on and it's Billingtons. Don't know how long I've had it and can't find a use by date on the bag. It has a mild brown sugar smell to it. DH made a baked cheesecake last week and used it. We've all been fine 👍

It should have a best before date on it somewhere but it should be fine. Sugar lasts a very long time. As someone else said, it'll smell of Molasses.

Technically sugar doesn’t go off but it’s recommended you use it within 2 years of opening
