Flight cancelled due to Dorian.. compensation question

Hi all, after some advice, our flight home was cancelled ( due to fly on tuesday 3rd sept,) airport was closed until lunch 4th, the flight we got home on was thursday 5th at 8:40 pm, virgin were flying on the wednesday, but we heard nothing from them. I assumed we wasnt able to claim, due to airport closing, but then someone said that we should have been on the wednesday flight, and can claim due to not flying straight away? Its just me and hubbie both lost two day at work.. un paid, and girls lost a trip to thorpe park with the school, so if we can claim anything it would help greatly

As it was a natural, weather related unfortunately you can claim anything according to Martin lewis. They need to get you out there and did as safety is there main concern. Enjoy your holiday. Look in to it further when you return.

Im not sure but I think that as the disruption was caused by a hurricane, so outside of their control, no comp will be paid and you'll have to contact your travel insurance.

This is what i thought, but then because we wasnt offered the wednesday flight, i am keeping my fingers crossed , virgin holidays were an absolute joke unfortunately, and the rep in the hotel next to us decided to not work the day after the cancellations, so couldnt even get hold of anyone :-(

We were also meant to fly home on the 3rd but flew back on the 6th arrived home at 1am this morning(7th).
Thomas Cook gave us all a letter when we got off the plane at Manchester to give to our travel insurance companies. So guess that means as it was weather related it has to go through your insurance? Haven’t looked into ours yet.
Had to pay 3 days extra hotel, car hire and airport parking. Thank god for credit cards! Our Kids schools and our employers have been great though. I had annual leave to take so used that. Sent the schools/employers the email from TC as proof.

On a side note - TC were great though - kept us informed via email and the flight we had was a Condor plane with a German crew. Think they got it in especially to get us home as we were flight-only passengers? We had an 8am time slot at MCO so that was unusual.
I did notice that TC customers that were due to fly home on the 4th went home on the 5th though. So guessing they may have been the package holiday customers? We had to wait the extra day to get a flight.

Virgin should have been better with you though. That sounds poor customer service. It wasn’t particularly nice waiting to see if the Hurricane was going to hit Orlando so companies should have at least sent emails/calls even just to say they didn’t have any info.
Good luck in claiming.

If and its a big IF there where free seats available on the Wednesday then you could try and claim that you should have been on a flight that day. But if the flights as I suspect where full then Virgin did what they had to do and got you home as soon as possible so no EU compensation due apart from the duty of care part. Basically any extra hotel accommodation and food bills that you spent.

The Wednesday flight might have been full, in which case Thursday would have been the earliest available.
