New house. Slowest internet ever ;(
We've just moved and have been waiting for BT to install a line which finally happened today. We have wifi but it's painfully slow. The engineer said they are starting to put fibre on the estate but so far 35 lines for 600 houses!
I knew the internet would be slower until the fibre arrived but this is almost unusable. I've just tried to watch a YouTube video and got no response at all. I'm better off on data. Anyone else living without fibre? Is it really this bad. Anything I can do to help it? |

I've recently moved to the sticks - we had 100mb virgin before.
Luckily enough BT put us on standard for 3 weeks (new line) then upgraded us to Fiber. We've now got 45mb. My dad on the other hand, he gets 0.03 - better off using a dongle.

I was on virgin 100mb before..,
I was getting 1mb this afternoon. They have said it can take a few days to settle but I'm going to go mad if this is as good as it gets. |

What about a homeplug? Would that help at all until you get a decent fibre connection. They run on a hard wire network but without all the wires. We use one in my son's room for his Xbox

it is really all about distance to the exchange.
fab website SamKnows tells you all about your exchange. I can see mine from the window so our basic broadband is fab. My brother in law is miles from his and the internet is mince. He gets a better signal using BTs wifi hotspot - rather than when he had the bt router at home! Maybe try that. You may have to wait an age for fiber too. BT have a duty to provide good broadband and have heard of them ripping up contracts for the worst areas - but you'd need to know talk talk, sky, plus net etc would be better and that's doubtful... Maybe better of using the sitefinder website and seeing which 4g provider is better locally and getting the dongle from them (if its ee, they are owned by BT now so maybe they compensate you with one). Homeplugs are great for streaming from a home nas but if the signal coming in is bad, that wont help. They are a few router tweaks you can do - perhaps if for example mobiles or cordless phones are causing interference - but it is ultimately how far away from your exchange you are.

The first thing our son checked was his projected broadband speed, before he bought his house. He works from home so needs the speed.

You won't get a fast stable speed straight out of the box with BT it can take from a few hours to a few days to get the best speed from your line. You will need it give it time to settle down.

We have fibre but because of the age of our house and therefore its very thick walls, it was hopeless upstairs. We bought a booster that just plugs in to one of the upstairs sockets - works really well. Was only about £10 from Asda.

New lines always take time to settle down. Give it a week or so

When we were looking for houses broadband speed was paramount. We dismissed some nice places because of the slow speed.
We ended up with a fantastic house with good speed though. We got the full speed on BT from the day it was installed. Hopefully it won't be long before you can get fibre. |
