I often have a kids meal in the quick serve restaurants on Disney, when we went to the Rainforest Cafe at DS I just had a starter and that was enough

I tend to order a starter along with a side. I'm not a big eater either but I am vegetarian as well so the kids menu is usually out as it contains beef burgers and chicken nuggets (or similar!)

Food volume wise I would probably be happier with a kid's meal and there is usually no problem ordering one. However, I would still order an adults meal because the kids menus are sometimes a bit samey throughout the parks and resorts, and they are not usually to my taste.
Depending on what kind of restaurant you are in you could ask for a starter or some sides to come out with everyone else's main meals. That way you are not tied into the kid's menu.
We tend to only eat two meals a day due to the heat and humidity when we go in August, and I often only eat half of a meal. Unfortunately OH and DS want different food, and usually want a whole portion, so I can't go down the sharing route.
