Tampa Car Hire

Hello there.

We are flying to Tampa in August 2018 and just wanted to ask about peoples experience with car hire in Tampa Airport.

We fly there last year and although the car hire worked out fine (we'd booked a 7 seat minivan), there were literally only 2 minivans left in the garage when we went to get our car!

We booked with Alamo and if i recall correctly each rental company had their own garage..?

Anyway, we are looking to book either a 7 seat minivan again or a large SUV and I was just wondering what other peoples experiences have been in Tampa and if there are any tips ie; am I ok using the airport rentals or should i look offsite too?

Thanks all for your help and advice.

Sean

Tampa airport and rental garage are much smaller than their equivalents at MCO, but the number of passengers is significantly lower also.

We've been travelling via TPA for a decade now (never flown into MCO in all that time) and have used both Avis and (mostly) Alamo. The garages are nominally separate, but really they really just use certain rows in the multi-storey car rental garage.

I do not recall a time where we have not had a choice of vehicle from at least three (we normally rent an intermediate SUV).

The smaller locations don't hold a large stock of the less-popular vehicles. When we rented from a small Alamo outfit in Miami South Beach, they had to order in any non-bog-standard vehicle.

Minivans would certainly fall into the less-popular category. I would imagine that there are actually not that many minivans and that they only hold enough to meet the booked demand. Large SUV's would be thinner on the ground, but I would guess that they may well hold more than are actually booked - mostly in the hope/expectaation that the booking desk can up-sell. On that note, I have not had too much in the way of persuasion - they try, but it is relatively gentle and not real hard-sell

Regards

Gary

I'm looking for car hire Tampa next summer too. So far, BA and virgin atlantic have come up best so far. Some of the prices are absolutely ridiculous!

We have used Tampa airport a number of times & booked via BA fly drive so Avis preferred for car rental . We always seem to collect the car quite quickly & for 7 of us have been allocated a large SUV Chevy Tahoe or similar .

Hi again,

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to respond. It's helped a lot. I'm now just trawling through all the sites to find the cheapest minivan... but I really fancy a large SUV!
