We usually stay the first night at a Value Resort in order for us to check-in early the next morning. We are normally able to move rooms to something more to our liking, if we don't like our allocation. Being flexible about waiting for a better room helps as well. Late check-in means being left with what others don't want.

This was my thinking also. Just been on to check in and the only option was high floor (after all that)
