Auschwitz
Have always wanted to go. Presumably Krakow would be the place to fly to and stay? How would I get from there to Auschwitz? I would expect it to be emotionally draining - how long would you recommend we dedicate to it? Also, I've always had a desire to go to Switzerland, Austria and Germany - could I tag any of these on to the same trip. Would 7-10 days seem reasonable?
Thanks in advance. |

We stayed in Krakow a few years ago which is a fabulous city for a break We went to Auschwitz & Birkenau by using a small tour company run by 2 polish guys and they came highly recommened on Tripavisor, they were brilliant as well. We were driven to Auschwitz first and the driver waits in the carpark with all the other drivers and we were told to be as long as we wanted, we were then driven to Birkenau and again told to be as long as we wanted.
It is quite upsetting seeing it all and listening/reading to things there but I'm glad I did it and would recommend anyone going to Krakow to go but be prepared to find it upsetting and emotional This was a few years ago and I cannot remember the 2 guys names but have a look on Tripadvisor for recommendations.

We tagged Kraków on to the end of visiting Rome, flight from Rome to Kraków was very cheap.
We had 4 nights in an apartment, pre booked the auschwitz tour at home with escape2poland, they picked us up early from our apartment, a small minibus, about 8 people on board. We met our guide there and were given headsets to listen to her as we went round, definitely have a guided tour, they tell you so much and our guide was particularly good. Then a short drive to the other camp and a long walk down through a very bleak track along the old train line. It was a long and draining day, upsetting but definitely a must do. Highly recommended, Kraków was beautiful, we went when the Christmas market was on, very cheap to eat and stay there.

We stayed in Krakow and loved it. Mainly went for Auschwitz, but there is lots of other stuff to do, our friends went to the salt mines while we went to Auschwitz, as we only went for a long weekend.
We booked a taxi through the hotel, he also did the airport run, again through the hotel. We spilt the cost between 7 of us. I cant remember how much (details may be on my trip report, in my signature) but it was like everything there, cheap. We paid for the tour when we got there, our taxi driver lead us straight to the front of the queue. I think we spent just half a day there, it is a tour with an English speaking guide, they speak into headphones, so you dont have to stay close to the group and you arent rushed at all. If you stay with the tour, a free bus takes you to Birkenau, but you had to wait, so we called our taxi driver and went without the tour. We didnt feel we missed out without the tour, but there is a museum, I think its extra, but you have to be with the tour guide. Not sure about adding on the other places, but I would stay for a few days at Krakow, lots of history and underground bars to explore.

As an alternative, I went to Auschwitz by bus for an early slot so that I could tour without a guide as I wanted to visit at my own pace. Spent over had a day there and at Birkenau. I didn't think I missed out by not having a guide as I spent as long as I wanted viewing the exhibits and wandering Birkenau and I had done some reading beforehand.
No cost for a self guided tour and 14 zlotys for the bus. |

We just got back from Kraków last week. It's a fab city and I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. We mainly went so that we could visit Auschwitz and Birkenau but the whole city was really enjoyable with a buzzing atmosphere.
We used Prime Tours to organise our trip to Auschwitz and Birkenau. They were brilliant and I'd highly recommend them. They are number 1 on tripadvisor - the prices were really reasonable and all the drivers were friendly, prompt and spoke perfect English. We tagged a visit to the salt mines on to the day which made it a very long day (about 12 hours with a stop for lunch before the salt mines) but as we only had 3 days in Kraków we wanted to cram as much as possible in. The salt mines are amazing! Definitely visit if you can. We also visited Wadowice to go to the museum of family home of Pope John Paul II. It was an excellent museum if that's your kind of subject! Schindler's Factory and Wawel castle are also worth visiting. I'll definitely be returning to Kraków as there's plenty more to see and it's great value! |

We did a City break a few years ago - 3 days & stayed at the Holiday inn in Krakow which was a short walk away from the centre.
We also visited Auschwitz, Berkanhau & the salt mines in one day & booked through: Google: krakowtrip/contact_daniel_thomas/ Was a great experience. Would highly recommend them. Cheers Les
