When the windscreen issue came up here on the dibb before our holiday last month, I contacted Avis. They informed me that windscreen cover wasn't covered? I ended up buying an extended excess policy from the UK, just in case!

I think when you hire in Europe the CDW excess (your normally on the hook for 800 euros plus unless you pay for further reduction) normally excludes windscreen, undercarriage, roof and tyres and keys. The advantage of buying a third party policy is it covers the cdw excess fee and all other costs (on a pay and claim back service).

In the US the CDW/LDW mostly has a 0 excess and when you read the small print it says CDW relinquishes you from any financial responsibility of loss to damage of car so tyres and windscreens would be covered.

Saying that if you called then out to change a tyre then this may be charged for (as Tom said)

I did buy a third party policy though when I went just as belt and braces peace of mind. As others said it's the loss of keys that concerned me.
