How do I back up an iPad?

Following on from the post by Jules on a slow iPad, I would like to know how to back up mind.

My photos are in the Cloud, so do I need to do anything with these?

I just plug mine into laptop & sign into iTunes where it backs up to either cloud or laptop.

It depends on whether you have Optimisation switched on for your photos ("Optimise iPhone Storage").

In effect, your photos are backed up to the iCloud. However, if you have switched optimisation on, then most of the photos on your phone are converted to thumbnails; the original photos in their original resolution only exist on iCloud.

If you want to back up the photos onto a laptop or PC, then you need to switch optimisation off and download the photos to your iPhone ("Download and Keep Originals"). Once all the photos are copied onto your iPhone, you can connect your iPhone to a laptop, start iTunes on the laptop and copy them onto there as a back up.

Obviously, you need enough storage on your iPhone to download the photos from the iCloud.

Selecting backup on iTunes on a PC/laptop doesn't backup the iCloud photos, only those on your phone.
